There is no need to know a foreign language in order to help a neighbor learn English. If you are at least 19 years old and can commit to tutoring a learner for approximately two hours a week for one year, please join us! For more information, please read the full announcement. Literacy Volunteers held its annual holiday party at the Warner Library on December 14th,2008. Tutors, students, families and guests attended. There was a variety of food and desserts from throughout the world. Thanks to all who made this event possible and the Warner Library for graciously allowing us to arrive early and set up for the event. BEST Plus Testing Volunteers Debra Portnoy, Carol Hagglund and Cristina Bloise were trained in the Fall of 2008 in the administration of the BEST Plus Oral English Proficiency test. Alice Egan Brothers- In Memoriam Our friend and colleague Alice Egan Brothers passed away October 17, 2008. Alice had been a member of Literacy Volunteers of the Tarrytowns for 32 years. She served as a tutor, treasurer and board member. Many in our organization met Alice when they attended our tutor training workshop — for many years she assisted with the workshop when the format of the training was to show filmstrips cued by recorded presentations. For the past 14 years, she was present at the first session to collect workshop fees and serve refreshments. Behind the scenes, Alice kept track of our income and expenses, made timely reimbursements and provided formal financial statements at each board meeting. Alice was well known in our community through her work with many other volunteer organizations — Meals on Wheels, Friends of Warner Library, The Historical Society, Project Time Out (respite help) and the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. Her keen mind, welcoming smile, pale blue eyes and helping hands will be cherished and missed by us all. -- By Mary Jane Driscoll Fall 2008 ESOL Tutor Training Workshops - Tarrytown, June 29, 2008 Two workshops to train volunteer tutors of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) will be offered by Literacy Volunteers of the Tarrytowns this Fall.
Trainees should be 19 or older. It is not necessary to speak another language or to have prior teaching experience. Upon completion of the workshop, the trained tutor accepts an adult student from the waiting list, and teaches that person on a one-to-one basis. A commitment of two hours a week for a year (minus vacations, etc.) is expected. To register, please fill out our volunteer application form, stop by the Warner Library or call and leave a message at 914-432-3052. A materials fee of $17.50 is collected at the first meeting. There are no further expenses or dues. LVT Administrative Assistant Hired - Tarrytown, April 20, 2008 As part of the ALE add-on grant for 2008, the Board of Directors decided to engage a part-time independent contractor to work as an administrative assistant. A job listing on the Internet resulted in over 60 responses. Many applicants were outstanding and several of those were fluent in Spanish as well as in English. Board members Nelson Correa, Candie Frankel, and Sharon Hart interviewed the top four candidates and selected Cristina Bloise for the position. Annual Meeting June 14; Members to Elect Board, Officers - Tarrytown, April 20, 2008 Saturday, June 14, 2008, has been set as the date of the Annual Meeting of Literacy Volunteers of the Tarrytowns. The agenda includes the election of a new Board of Directors and program officers. The meeting will convene at Warner Library at 11:00 a.m. LVT Telephone, Fax and Internet Service Installed - Tarrytown, April 20, 2008 LV of the Tarrytowns now has its own telephone, fax and Internet service in the LV tutoring center at the Warner Library. This is one of the items financed by the add-on ALE grant. The phone number is 914-432-3052. The fax number is 914-487-2594. Both are now listed in the LVT contact page. Voicemail messages will be received at the new telephone number. Messages will be checked daily and a reply to them will be made within two business days. Please note that the LVT telephone voicemail should not be used for emergencies or cancellation of tutoring appointments. Spring Workshop in ESOL Training - Tarrytown, April 20, 2008 Mary Jane Driscoll, workshop leader, and co-leader Sharon Hart are training five volunteers to become ESOL tutors in the spring workshop that began March 1. They both are very pleased with the enthusiasm and dedication shown by the enrollees. Jim Kittler Takes Matcher Post, Succeeding Anne Cahill - Tarrytown, April 20, 2008 We are happy to announce that Jim Kittler, who joined us as a tutor three years ago, and who has also served as a tutor adviser, has accepted the post of Tutor-Student Matcher, succeeding Anne Cahill. Jim has learned the job, working with Anne, and this month he matched all the new tutors in the spring workshop with students. He was welcomed by the Board of Directors at the March meeting. Anne joined Literacy Volunteers in April 1995 and has served as matcher and board member for the past eleven years. Ten New Tutors Welcomed to LVT - Tarrytown, Dec. 12, 2007 Ten new tutors characterized by workshop leaders Sharon Hart and Joe Ambrose as “exceptionally dedicated and eager to begin” were welcomed to LVT at the conclusion of the fall 2007 ESOL workshop. They are: Penny Brome, Nina Coulter, Tess Donohue, Steve Dyott, Barbara Friedlich, Ursula Guzzo, Angelica Hinojosa, Joan Meade, Tom Nee and Amy Plofker. We are delighted to have them working with us. Volunteer for Teaching Materials Librarian - Tarrytown, Nov. 5, 2007 The LVT board is seeking a volunteer to be responsible for ordering, cataloging, and shelving the various teaching materials we make available in the tutoring room. These materials include textbooks, workbooks, and gift books such as dictionaries. The responsibilities average 1 to 3 hours per week but may require more time when orders come in and need processing. Ellaine Goodman, Director of Teaching Materials, is unable to continue the job at this time because of a hand injury. (Ellaine will continue serving on the board of directors and as a tutor adviser.) LVT Web Site Now Available in Spanish - Tarrytown, Feb. 15, 2007 The web site of the Literacy Volunteers of the Tarrytowns is now available in Spanish. The site translation was made possible thanks to translation services of Andinum, a software firm in Sleepy Hollow. Visitors to our web site (www.lvtarrytown.org) can access the Spanish version of the site by simply clicking on any page the button «Español». The service includes automatic translation of new content as it is regularly added or updated on the web site, and will allow us to better serve our incoming Spanish-speaking students.
